Spending nine years in procurement with the United States Air Force, Kathy Nishnic was an assistant to a retired Air Force colonel and reported directly to General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas. In this capacity, she provided accounting and materials needed for the golf course, gym, and other facilities used by those stationed at Torrejon Air Base in Spain. Now a top-ranking broker and senior vice president of investments with Mantei and Associates in Lexington, South Carolina, Kathy Nishnic enjoys the fine wines of France’s Cotes du Rhone region.
Cotes du Rhone encompasses about 86,000 acres, meandering down the Rhone River from Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhone to Avignon. Among the oldest wine-producing areas in the world, people have been enjoying its wine since ancient times. In 1729, an edict from the king required that each cask from the region be stamped with CDR, an indication of the quality that could be found nowhere else.
Cotes du rhone is an appellation taken from the region where the wine is made, similar to the name of the bubbly wine that is taken from its home in Champagne. Mostly consisting of red blends, cotes du rhones are smooth and pair well with foods. They tend to be fruity and easy on the palate, and are not necessarily expensive – many are available for under $25 a bottle.
