A popular tourist destination in Spain is the Great Mosque of Cordova (Mezquita). With the building forming a rectangular area of over 250,000 square feet, it is one of the largest mosques in the world and is only slightly smaller than Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica. Construction began in 784-786 under Umayyad ruler ‘Abd ar-Rahman, and expansions were carried out over the next two hundred years. It is one of the best representations of Islamic architecture and art in Spain and Western Europe.

In the south portion of the complex is the prayer area, whose roof is buttressed by an army of 850 pillars that apportions it into 19 aisles aligned north to south, and 29 aisles facing east. The mosque also features a prayer niche with a recessed roof that is shell-shaped and made of a whole white marble block, while its walls are adorned with gold and mosaics. In 1236 the mosque was turned into a Catholic cathedral with structural changes made in its central interiors.
